In todays lesson we brainstormed in our groups to create an idea for an advert, to do with our topic, freak or unique. We started off by coming up with an idea for the product, we chose a deodorant that makes you immortal. For our advert we will have two people walking through a park, suddenly the camera will fade out and back in again to one of the people dead on the floor. As the camera pans to the one still alive he says "Thank god I used immune".
Todays Lesson
In today's lesson we were put into filming groups, in my group there is Tana and Simeon. Simeon has previous experience with photography which will be a big help. We discussed some ideas of what freaky advert we wanted to do.
To get some ideas we watched 3 freaky adverts made by:
Sony - PS3
In this advert there is a baby doll sat in a room next to a PS3, for some reason the baby starts to cry and images flash in its eyes and then the PS3 levitates. I think that the whole purpose of this advert is to freak people out, as the advert makes absolutely no sense and has no relevance to the product other than the PS3 being in shot most of the time. This advert incorporates non-diegetic sound, i can tell that the sound has been added after the filming as dolls cant make the noises it makes.

Phones 4u - missing our deals will haunt you
This advert shows a woman who seems to be being followed by a little girl, but when she turns to look at the girl she is no where to be seen. This advert presents itself much like a horror film using non-diegetic sound (tense music), but also uses diegetic sound as you can hear the woman gasp and you can hear her steps.

Little Baby's Ice Cream - ice cream man
In this advert basically nothing happens. For around a minute, a man who seems to be entirely made up of cream or foam, eats spoonfuls of this cream stuff off of his head. The sound is this advert is non diegetic as there is a man speaking as a voice over for the advert and there is the sound of a baby-mobile in the background.

In todays lesson I learned how to make an image appear ghostly. First you must select the image and cut it out using either the pen tool or quick select. Once it is cut out go to Image > Adjustements > Desaturate, This will make the image look black and white. next you go to Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur. The last step is changing the opacity of your image, this will make your image appear see-through.

White Balance
Sometimes the picture on a camera can appear blue or yellow, white balance corrects that if you point the camera at something white e.g a sheet of paper.
1.Rule of Thirds
The rule of thirds means that a photo will look better if the subject is in the top or bottom/left or right third of the photo, but never in the middle.
2.Balancing Elements
This rule of photography means that, when taking a photograph you should have the main subject of your photo off-centre but also have a smaller subject of lesser importance in the space left by your subject
3.Leading lines
When looking at a photograph our eyes naturally look along lines that occur in the photo. This means you can make the subject of your photo stand out even more by having lines that lead up to it.
4.Symmetry and pattern
Our eyes are naturally drawn to symmetry and patterns, using these in your photographs can make your image very eye catching.
5.Viewpoint
the viewpoint of a photograph is the position from which you take it. This can greatly affect the way your photo is perceived
6.Background
The human eye is very easily distracted, so it is very important to ensure that that your background blends in nicely with your subject so that it isn't too distracting.
7.Depth
Because a photograph is two dimensional it is important to make sure that all the different layers of the photograph are represented properly. a way to do this is by overlapping your objects.
8.Framing
Framing is very good way of making the subject of your photo stand out. To do this you should find an object in the foreground of your subject (e.g. a fence) and centre your subject in a gap in the fence making a natural frame.
9.Cropping
Sometimes the impact of a photo is lost due to the fact that the main subject is too small. By cropping an image all the background "noise" is removed. This ensures the subject is the centre of attention.
Camera shots

I couldn't find any examples of non-diegetic sound.

Subversive Advertising
Subversive adverting is used by many activist groups in protest to the many things that big corporations do to harm the world and the people in it (e.g. animal testing, sweatshops). Subversive advertising is when someone creates an advert that makes a statement about a company, in protest to something that company is doing.
I used tetley tea, who are owned by Tata Sons. Tata Sons is a shell corporation based in India, one of the companies partners is the Ministry of Defense of the Government of India. Tata Sons funds many of the military's operations and has been a major part to play in the more recent conflicts between India and Pakistan on the borders.
This is my photoshoped version of the advert image i came up with.

photoshop edit

In this photo I worked with Daniel Semakula, we used the clone stamp tool to select the manatees eye and copy it onto its head. We used the same tool to copy its head onto its body and used the smudge tool to make it look smooth.
In this photo me and Daniel got the mouth from a photo of another person, and placed it on his face. We used the eraser tool to make the rest of the other persons face disappear.
In this photo me and Daniel used the same technique we used on the last photo to make it seem that there was a snake coming out of this mans ear
What have i learned?
- transform tool (ctrl T)
- hold shift and drag corners of an image to make it larger
- clone stamp tool (hold windows button + alt)
- how to use smudge tool

This is one of my freak images i chose it because:
- lots of blood
- eyes falling out
- brains showing
- teeth missing
- flesh missing
The artist that made this graphic is Rob Roskopp, he worked for many skateboard companies in the early 80's and 90's but the main one he made graphics for was Santa Cruz

This is another of my freak images, i chose it because:
- flesh is rotting on the gargoyles face
- bones showing and flesh missing
- eyes bulging out of their sockets
The artist that designed this advert for the skateboard company Zorlac is Pushead. Pushead was the creative director of Zorlac and developed all of their graphics and advertising campaigns.

This is another one of my freak images, i chose it because:
- depictions of satan
- severed heads all over the floor
- dead body's hanging from a crucifix
The artist behind this graphic was Marc Mckee, who worked for many skate companies during the 90's and still makes graphics today for companies such as Cliche, Girl an Anti hero. This graphic is by far his most famous as it caused much controversy when the board was released with it being banned in several states in America, and still to this day the board is banned in Utah

Lesson 2
Today we learned about some of the techniques that are used by various different companies to make the consumers buy their products. A common technique is making the buyer feel as if they deserve to treat themselves with a certain product, for example Loriel's slogan "because I'm worth it". However some companies are just completely blatant with their advertising stating that they are the best with Carling's slogan being "probably the best beer in the world".
After we did a group task where we had to design a product based on a target market and a product idea. My groups product was a snack item for toddlers, so we came up with Spongebob Snackbar which contained raisins, oats and apple so it was a healthier choice for parents. Our product was set to cost £2.50 (4 pack) with every multi pack containing a free collectors toy.
