In todays lesson Tana, Simeon and I finished editing our final advert. We had to find sound effects off of youtube to put into our advertisement, as well as this we recorded Tana's voice for the end part of our video. When we were finished editing it we uploaded it to youtube.

Q1. What is ISO and what does it effect?
ISO is how sensitive your camera is to light. The lower the iso number, the lower the sensitivity to light.

Q2. When would we use the ‘P’ control setting on the camera mode dial.
The P setting on your camera means that you can control the white balance and the ISO.

Q3. Name two important consideration when attaching the tripod baseplate to the bottom of camera?
Two important considerations you need to think about when attaching a camera to a tripod are, to ensure it is properly attached to the baseplate and to ensure the tripod legs are all clipped in place.

Q4. Name three important considerations when using a red-head lighting kit
Three important considerations you need to think about when attaching a redhead light are, to ensure that the light is fully turned off and cooled down before you leave the room, make sure the tripod is set up fully, make sure the wire in the light hasn’t burned out.

Q5. When focusing the camera, what do we place on the object/subject to ensure it is the center of focus?
When focusing the camera, we place a green focus box on the object/subject to ensure it is the centre of focus.

Q6. Name two techniques we can use to adjust the brightness and contrast of a photograph?
Levels tool, Curves tool, shutter speed, apature.

Evaluation

This is my final piece of work. I produced a magazine advert for our product "Immune". To help me with my final piece I looked at adverts for deodorants and sports products and used them as inspiration for my final piece. These adverts usually only feature the product in the picture with very simplistic designs. I also researched on how big magazine adverts usually are. There are a few different sizes that are usually used but I used 128 X 190mm. I feel that my final piece would appeal to my target audience and would advertise our product very well but if I were to do it differently I would want a photo of someone using the spray.

The tools I used:

  • Gradient tool
  • Paint bucket tool
  • Pen tool
  • Magic wand
  • Adjustments - levels
  • Marquee tool

These are the shots of our location, taken by Simeon. The location is St Marys Rest Garden.

Proposal

Our product is a deodorant that makes the user immortal. The storyline/shot plan for our product is:
·

  •      Two people walking in a park
  •          Camera goes out of focus
  •          Then fades back in to one of the people dead on the floor
  •          The other person looks to the camera and says  “Thank god I have Immune on”
  •          The name/logo for our product flashes on screen

To make this advert we will need to use some props for our advert such as a deodorant can and some fake blood to make the death look realistic. We have an idea for a location, there is a small park/graveyard area very near to college. The actors we are going to use will be Gus & Tana. On the day we shoot the film, someone in our group will bring a spare T-shirt so they don’t have to walk around with fake blood all over their tops all day. Our target audience is teenagers and parents, we chose this target audience because parents want to ensure the safety of their kids.

These are the two labels me and Tana designed for our product "Immune". We chose two different design ideas. Our first design uses bright colours and blocky fonts, this design idea would be more suitable for parents who are buying for their children. The second design is targeted more at our teenage audience as it uses as rough, rugged font and dark, red colours.

For both designs we used the gradient tool to create a fading colour across the label. We also copied a bar-code image from the internet and put it on our label because otherwise it wouldn't be able to be sold in shops. We also looked up the ingredients found in deodorants and put them on the label as well, as if the ingredients of a product aren't stated somewhere on the packaging they can not be sold.

Logos

today we learned how to crop out text from an image. We went on Dafonts.com to choose a font for our product. To get the text from dafonts we had to either use print screen or the snipping tool, then you need to paste it into photoshop (ctrl + v). to crop your image the best way is to use the marquee tool. when your image of the font is cropped you use the magic wand tool to select the area around the text and press "delete" or "backspace" to delete it.

We chose these fonts because a few of them look like pixels which relates to our target audience of teenagers and parents as teenagers love gaming. a few others were chosen because they look rugged and dirty
The Library

Today in tutorial we went to have a look at the library, there was a large selection of books and comics to choose from. we were told that you can take out 8 items, but you have to return the items within 14 days. There is also a large selection  of films and magazines to choose from.

In todays lesson we brainstormed in our groups to create an idea for an advert, to do with our topic, freak or unique. We started off by coming up with an idea for the product, we chose a deodorant that makes you immortal. For our advert we will have two people walking through a park, suddenly the camera will fade out and back in again to one of the people dead on the floor. As the camera pans to the one still alive he says "Thank god I used immune".
Todays Lesson

In today's lesson we were put into filming groups, in my group there is Tana and Simeon. Simeon has previous experience with photography which will be a big help. We discussed some ideas of what freaky advert we wanted to do.

To get some ideas we watched 3 freaky adverts made by:

Sony - PS3

In this advert there is a baby doll sat in a room next to a PS3, for some reason the baby starts to cry and images flash in its eyes and then the PS3 levitates. I think that the whole purpose of this advert is to freak people out, as the advert makes absolutely no sense and has no relevance to the product other than the PS3 being in shot most of the time. This advert incorporates non-diegetic sound, i can tell that the sound has been added after the filming as dolls cant make the noises it makes.

Phones 4u - missing our deals will haunt you

This advert shows a woman who seems to be being followed by a little girl, but when she turns to look at the girl she is no where to be seen. This advert presents itself much like a horror film using non-diegetic sound (tense music), but also uses diegetic sound as you can hear the woman gasp and you can hear her steps.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2oL_gXECtg

Little Baby's Ice Cream - ice cream man

In this advert basically nothing happens. For around a minute, a man who seems to be entirely made up of cream or foam, eats spoonfuls of this cream stuff off of his head. The sound is this advert is non diegetic as there is a man speaking as a voice over for the advert and there is the sound of a baby-mobile in the background.

In todays lesson I learned how to make an image appear ghostly. First you must select the image and cut it out using either the pen tool or quick select. Once it is cut out go to Image > Adjustements > Desaturate, This will make the image look black and white. next you go to Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur. The last step is changing the opacity of your image, this will make your image appear see-through.

Composition rules

Panasonic HDC 900

Specifications:

Maximum Video Resolution1920 x 1080
Touchscreen
Number of Image Sensors3
Effective Image Resolution7.9 Megapixel

White Balance

Sometimes the picture on a camera can appear blue or yellow, white balance corrects that if you point the camera at something white e.g a sheet of paper.

1.Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds means that a photo will look better if the subject is in the top or bottom/left or right third of the photo, but never in the middle.

2.Balancing Elements

This rule of photography means that, when taking a photograph you should have the main subject of your photo off-centre but also have a smaller subject of lesser importance in the space left by your subject

3.Leading lines

When looking at a photograph our eyes naturally look along lines that occur in the photo. This means you can make the subject of your photo stand out even more by having lines that lead up to it.

4.Symmetry and pattern

Our eyes are naturally drawn to symmetry and patterns, using these in your photographs can make your image very eye catching.

5.Viewpoint

the viewpoint of a photograph is the position from which you take it. This can greatly affect the way your photo is perceived

6.Background

The human eye is very easily distracted, so it is very important to ensure that that your background blends in nicely with your subject so that it isn't too distracting.

7.Depth

Because a photograph is two dimensional it is important to make sure that all the different layers of the photograph are represented properly. a way to do this is by overlapping your objects.

8.Framing

Framing is very good way of making the subject of your photo stand out. To do this you should find an object in the foreground of your subject (e.g. a fence) and centre your subject in a gap in the fence making a natural frame.

9.Cropping

Sometimes the impact of a photo is lost due to the fact that the main subject is too small. By cropping an image all the background "noise" is removed. This ensures the subject is the centre of attention.

Camera shots

In the film "Wasp" by Andrea Arnold i found the following camera shots:

  • 00:40 -- CU (close up)
  • 00:45 -- MCU (medium close up)
  • 00:52 -- WS (wide shot)
  • 01:10 -- CA (cut away)
  • 01:17 -- Two-shot
  • 03:14 -- Cut-in
  • 04:05 -- ECU (extreme close up)
  • 04:37 -- VWS (very wide shot)
  • 09:16 -- EWS (extreme wide shot)
  • 09:30 -- OSS (over shoulder shot)
I also found the examples of diegetic sound:
  • 00:16 -- Mum shouting
  • 02:56 -- Mans car radio
  • 17:47 -- Siren
I couldn't find any examples of non-diegetic sound.

Subversive Advertising

Subversive adverting is used by many activist groups in protest to the many things that big corporations do to harm the world and the people in it (e.g. animal testing, sweatshops). Subversive advertising is when someone creates an advert that makes a statement about a company, in protest to something that company is doing.

I used tetley tea, who are owned by Tata Sons. Tata Sons is a shell corporation based in India, one of the companies partners is the Ministry of Defense of the Government of India. Tata Sons funds many of the military's operations and has been a major part to play in the more recent conflicts between India and Pakistan on the borders.

This is my photoshoped version of the advert image i came up with.

TV adverts

 Lamborgini advert -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xd0Ok-MkqoE

This advert uses very tense music for its advert, it sounds as if it were from an action film, it uses non-diegetic sound.

maybelline advert -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6x6wi2hYto

this advert uses a bright upbeat song and bright colours, it also uses non-diegetic sound.

CSL Sofas advert -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5WxRm6Oi-w

this advert uses an old song, it sounds classy and comforting to go with their sofas, this advert uses non-diegetic sound.

This image is from the film "Videodrome" I chose it because its a crazy piece of imagery. To recreate this image I would need a tv.

I chose this image because it makes me laugh, it shows a ridiculously fat woman from the film "slither". To recreate this image I would need a massive ball.

This image is also from the film "the thing", I chose this image because it was one of the first scenes in film to use computer generated after effects. To recreate this image I would need to edit a photo from photoshop.

I chose this image because it showcase's some of the very early techniques of horror film production in the film "The Incredible Melting Man". To recreate this image I would need lots of ketchup and polythene.

I chose this image because it features one of my favorite actors John Carpenter in the film "The Thing". To recreate this image I would need a polystyrene mold and lots of glue.

I chose this image because it is from one of my favorite films "Halloween". To recreate this image I would need a knife, a mask and a set of stairs.

I chose this image because it is from one of my favorite films "Leviathan". To recreate this image I would need some make up to create the mouth on the hand, or I would take the photo and edit in a hand on photoshop.
I chose this image because it portrays a woman transforming into the dead. To recreate this picture I would need a film standard make up crew.

I chose this image because it uses good colours with the crisp whites and bold red. If I were to recreate this image I would need a camera and some ketchup.

I chose this image because it is from one of my favorite films "Hellraiser". If I were to recreated this image I would need a film standard make-up crew, lots of polythene and wire.

In this lesson we learned about the functions that we will use, they are:
  • ·         Shutter button
  • ·         Viewfinder
  • ·         Timer
  • ·         Review button
  • ·         EVF
  • ·         LED
  • ·         Delete button

photoshop edit

Daniel and I worked on this image today we used the pen tool to select the faces off of images and paste them onto another photo. it gave me a better grasp of how to use layers in photoshop and how to select images properly.

 Lesson 4

In this photo I worked with Daniel Semakula, we used the clone stamp tool to select the manatees eye and copy it onto its head. We used the same tool to copy its head onto its body and used the smudge tool to make it look smooth.

In this photo me and Daniel got the mouth from a photo of another person, and placed it on his face. We used the eraser tool to make the rest of the other persons face disappear.

In this photo me and Daniel used the same technique we used on the last photo to make it seem that there was a snake coming out of this mans ear

What have i learned?

  • transform tool (ctrl T)
  • hold shift and drag corners of an image to make it larger
  • clone stamp tool (hold windows button + alt)
  • how to use smudge tool
Tutorial

This is one of my freak images i chose it because:

  • lots of blood
  • eyes falling out
  • brains showing
  • teeth missing
  • flesh missing
The artist that made this graphic is Rob Roskopp, he worked for many skateboard companies in the early 80's and 90's but the main one he made graphics for was Santa Cruz

https://snurfer.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/1face2black.jpg?w=652

This is another of my freak images, i chose it because:

  • flesh is rotting on the gargoyles face
  • bones showing and flesh missing
  • eyes bulging out of their sockets
The artist that designed this advert for the skateboard company Zorlac is Pushead. Pushead was the creative director of Zorlac and developed all of their graphics and advertising campaigns.

This is another one of my freak images, i chose it because:
  • depictions of satan
  • severed heads all over the floor
  • dead body's hanging from a crucifix
The artist behind this graphic was Marc Mckee, who worked for many skate companies during the 90's and still makes graphics today for companies such as Cliche, Girl an Anti hero. This graphic is by far his most famous as it caused much controversy when the board was released with it being banned in several states in America, and still to this day the board is banned in Utah

Lesson 2
Today we learned about some of the techniques that are used by various different companies to make the consumers buy their products. A common technique is making the buyer feel as if they deserve to treat themselves with a certain product, for example Loriel's slogan "because I'm worth it". However some companies are just completely blatant with their advertising stating that they are the best with Carling's slogan being "probably the best beer in the world".

After we did a group task where we had to design a product based on a target market and a product idea. My groups product was a snack item for toddlers, so we came up with Spongebob Snackbar which contained raisins, oats and apple so it was a healthier choice for parents. Our product was set to cost £2.50 (4 pack) with every multi pack containing a free collectors toy.
